Violence Prevention & Community Safety

Supporting organizations deepen their analysis of transformative justice practices; supporting solutions that are beyond carceral systems and addressing the root causes of violence.

What We Do

In theory, our ideas of prevention center a kind of justice that focuses more on the healing and wellbeing of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and includes, but is never limited to, the accountability of people and systems that/who cause harm.

In practice, our role as a Coalition is to provide technical support, training, and facilitation that can help us reshape the conditions and systems that influence our day to day lives. We see prevention as the ongoing work to engage with communities seeking to address the individual actions, communal beliefs, and systemic conditions that allow GBV to exist.

A new vision

This role was created in 2016 to support gender-based violence organizations in our region understand the nuances of human/sex trafficking, sex work, and the patriarchal roots that can be exploitive in either case. We knew that Black, Indigenous, and POC survivors of GBV were being criminalized in cases of survival, exploitation, and consensual relationships alike, and that there would have to be a response that centers the protection, and ongoing healing of survivors on individual, communal, and systemic levels.

CEGV recognizes that Transformative Justice comes from Black and Indigenous communities that have and continue to seek liberation from state sanctioned harm, and that carceral feminism within our GBV movement has exacerbated these harms.

As Transformative Justice becomes more mainstream, there is risk of co-optation and continuation of harm by people and organizations whether well intentioned or not. We seek to be accountable to and transparent with Black and Indigenous communities as we continue learning how to incorporate the philosophies and practices of Transformative Justice in our work to seek liberation from Gender-Based Violence.

Past and Related Projects

Demonstrate LGBTQ Access

LGBTQ people, families, and broader communities face numerous barriers to accessing the services or programs of community-based organizations.

Demonstrate Access is a free resource website with ideas and tools for community-based service organizations. It was designed to help providers and organizations identify barriers and make changes in policy and practice to increase access for LGBTQ communities.

Mapping Prevention

Mapping Prevention is a short-term participatory action research initiative. Led by anti-violence community organizers committed to centering the perspectives and experiences of BIPOC people, this community engagement process sought to identify frameworks of domestic and sexual violence prevention for strategic expansion through public funding. There was a focus on approaches to prevention that explicitly address racism and its intersections with sexism and other forms of oppression as root causes.

The TJ Cohort

The goal of the Cohort is to create access points for communities to identify, create, and experiment with their own gender-based violence prevention practices. Participants gather on a monthly basis to interrogate our relationships to systemic and interpersonal violence and how we can shape our cultures to play a part in prevention.
