Civil Legal System

In our work to support survivors, advocates, and family law professionals navigating the legal system, we are working to build a system that brings justice to people impacted by gender-based violence.

What we do

The Coalition develops tools and participates in community based projects specific to family law in order to improve outcomes for survivors involved in the family law system in King County.

The Justice for Families Project Manager provides training and education to advocates, attorneys, judicial decision-makers and other family law professionals regarding the impacts of intimate partner violence in the context of family law. The goal is to increase safety for DV survivors and their children through increasing community and court awareness of the ongoing impact of DV post separation.

Responding to Community Voices

In 2005, CEGV (then known as the King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence) gathered focus groups of domestic violence survivors, advocates, attorneys, and other service providers. Participants were asked to describe their experiences when trying to escape their abusive partners and many pointed to the family law system as a complex,  overwhelming, and invalidating obstacle.

This culminated in the report I Just Want to Be Safe: Battered Women’s Experiences with the Family Law System In King County. This report has since informed the Coalition’s work in regards to the family law system.

Projects

Justice for Families Project

The Justice for Families Project is funded by the Federal Justice Department Office on Violence Against Women to develop the Intimate Partner Violence Impact Assessment (IPVIA). Find out more about the IPVIA and related tools and training opportunities related to post separation battering and family law.

Family Law Work Group

The Family Law Work Group (FLWG) consists of community-based legal advocates from several advocacy programs, legal aid services attorneys, private family law attorneys, court representatives and others involved in King County Superior Court family law and protection order processes. We meet monthly to discuss trending issues, problem solve, share resources, and support each other.

Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPO)

Survivors often seek protection for themselves and their children via domestic violence protection orders (DVPOs) that can provide immediate relief by limiting contact and establishing temporary parenting and housing arrangements. Find tip sheets, tools, and resources for advocates, attorneys, evaluators, and judicial officers.
