New Beginnings provides a 24-hour help line, technology safety tips, and a technology clinic to support people “experiencing threats, harassment, stalking or other kinds of abuse.”
Website Safety Features
This website follows the best practices for agency websites created by the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Safety Net Project. That includes:
- displaying a visible safety alert banner at the top of every page.
- provide a “quick exit” escape mechanism (more details in next section) based on the latest research on user experience best practices.
- providing a contact form that includes questions to determine if it’s safe to contact the person submitting the form.
- providing information about tech safety for survivors and attempting to avoid giving a false sense of security.
- building an accessible website.
About the “Quick Exit” Button
This website provides a mechanism to immediately replace the visible page with the Google.com home page. This feature can be activated by:
- clicking the “Quick Exit” button in the upper-right corner of the site.
- pressing the ESC key 3 times in a row.
- tapping the screen 3 times in a 2-second period (touch devices only).
The escape feature deletes the page being viewed from history but no other pages. The escape button does not protect visitors from key loggers, screen capture software, or other forms of digital surveillance.
