In a study titled, “There’s No One I Can Trust”, 50% of domestic violence survivors with direct experience of mandated reports said the mandated report made things much worse. Only 3% stated it made things much better. Additionally, over 1 in 3 survivors stated they have not asked for help for fear of mandated reporting.
We must take seriously the harms of mandatory reporting practices on survivors, especially those most impacted such as youth, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ survivors. Our collective work requires upholding survivor self-determination.
