Mask You Live In Screening
We had such an awesome turnout and discussion at our screening of the Mask You Live In on April 2nd. Thank you to everyone who came inside on such a sunny Saturday afternoon!
The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity.
Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men.
The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.
The screening of the movie was both inspiring and devastating at the same time. We were fortunate to have a fabulous panel of experts to talk us through some key questions and points. Thank you to Ward Urion, Kelly Cue Davis, and Roy Fisher for leading us through some thoughtful questions and discussion. And, thank you to the audience for such energetic participation!
And, for those of you who haven’t seen the film, or those of you who would like to see the film again, they just announced that it is available for live streaming!
