SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Month Webinar: Protecting workers from abuse
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by King County Sexual Assault Resource Center \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkers are protected from sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace by federal\, state and local laws. But many still find it difficult to actually report abuse and get support. This is particularly true for Latinx survivors\, who face additional barriers such as language or fears of systems that may prevent them from seeking help when they experience sexual harassment or abuse.  \n\n\n\nKCSARC Dando Voz staff and guest panelists from Casa Latina\, Seattle Domestic Workers Standards Board\, Seattle OLS and the Washington Wage Claim Project will provide local historic perspective on how worker rights and freedoms from harassment were enacted\, what they guarantee\, and how Latinx workers can access support.  \n\n\n\nLearn why some workers\, such as hotel and domestic workers\, need specific safeguards\, support and reporting processes. We’ll address what barriers remain\, and next steps we can take to protect workers.  \n\n\n\nProtegiendo a los trabajadores contra el abuso \n\n\n\nLas leyes federales\, estatales y locales protegen a los trabajadores contra el acoso sexual y el abuso en el lugar de trabajo. Sin embargo\, para muchos trabajadores sigue siendo difícil denunciar situaciones de abuso y recibir ayuda. Los trabajadores latinos en particular deben enfrentar obstáculos adicionales\, como las dificultades con el idioma y el temor a interactuar con ciertos sistemas\, lo que les impide pedir ayuda frente al acoso o abuso sexual.  \n\n\n\nUn grupo de panelistas invitados\, junto al personal bilingüe de KCSARC\, hablarán sobre las leyes locales que protegen los derechos y libertades de los trabajadores: su origen y alcance\, y cómo los trabajadores latinos pueden acceder a los beneficios de estas legislaciones.  \n\n\n\nDurante el encuentro hablaremos sobre por qué ciertos trabajadores\, como los empleados domésticos y el personal de hoteles\, necesitan protecciones y especiales a la hora de denunciar estas situaciones. También reflexionaremos sobre los obstáculos que aún permanecen y lo que todavía queda por hacer para proteger a los trabajadores.

DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by the Coalition Ending Gender-Based Violence (CEGV)\, King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA)\, and City of Seattle Human Services Department (HSD). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYWCA Phillis Wheatley Branch \n\n\n\n2820 E Cherry St Seattle 98122 \n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of building relationships across homeless housing and gender-based violence systems!  \n\n\n\nHousing System navigators\, advocates\, and case managers are encouraged to attend! \n\n\n\nThis is the first in-person meeting for this newly formed group that aims to build relationships\, share resources\, and ultimately make recommendations to better meet the needs of survivors who are homeless and/or experiencing housing instability.  \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat will we be doing?\n\n\n\nWe will be conducting a Journey Mapping exercise: mapping the experiences of survivors as they navigate our specific systems and programs. Come prepared with 2-3 client scenarios that exemplify your agency’s sub-population expertise and convey the paths your clients navigate. \n\n\n\n\n\nBreakout groups will be by sub-population: you will work alongside other agency participants who serve the same GBV sub-population (i.e. Trans/Two Spirit\, Commercial Sexual Exploitation\, Families etc.).  You can best prepare for this by calling to mind 2-3 client scenarios which you feel exemplify both a.) your agency’s sub-population expertise and b.) will best convey the journey of clients within your area of expertise. \n\n\n\nWhy Journey Mapping? \n\n\n\nJourney mapping is an exercise that helps us to visualize a client’s journey through homelessness. This communal mapping process will help us to capture the many threads of GBV Homelessness response system that contributes to its overall landscape and current state. Journey Mapping serves to highlight critical intersections\, gaps as well as opportunities for capacity building.  \n\n\n\nWhat is our goal? \n\n\n\nOur aim is to leave this gathering with a clearer understanding of the many different identities and situations of which survivors enter homelessness\, are cycled through and/or bridged out of homelessness\, so that\, we may strengthen our coalition’s work to improve its overall functioning and health. We all know that there is a malnourished\, complex web of services that survivors must interact with\, and that the threads of this web must be better understood\, coordinated and invested in. Our goal as a GBV-Homelessness Collaborative\, is to help inform our government agencies\, so that they can not only plan better but also invest better. This exercise will direct us all as to how to move towards improved collaboration across systems\, future-state visioning and advocacy.  \n\n\n\nThis meeting is open to CEGV membership organizations\, homeless housing providers\, and other providers from adjacent systems interested in this intersection.

Prior to that\, Mr. Jefferson was a public defense attorney in Thurston County for more than 16 years and previously worked as public defender in Kent and Seattle. He helped establish Thurston Count’s pretrial diversion program\, First Look program\, Trueblood Diversion program and Felony Leadership Improvement Project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Osborne consults on antiracist leadership\, social justice practice\, and prevention of gender-based violence. A former prosecutor and trial attorney\, her expertise includes historic legacies of racism; the evolution of structural process\, policies\, and cultures; roles of women of color in positions of power and leadership and on organizations becoming racially equitable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than 25 years\, Doris O’Neal has been dedicated to survivor-defined advocacy\, public policy\, and restorative justice\, with a focus on helping survivors who are African American\, living in poverty\, or experiencing housing instability. Doris O’Neal is currently the Director of Gender Based Violence Specialized Services.
