SUMMARY:Building Changes' Diversion Training
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Washington State Advanced Diversion Consultants & Trainers\, Africatown International\, and the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund\, Building Changes is coordinating intensive two-day Diversion trainings. These two-day trainings are free and will be offered multiple times in 2025. \n\n\n\nWhat is Diversion: Diversion offers flexible\, light-touch services that may be coupled with minimal financial assistance that results in a temporary or permanent housing arrangement outside of the homeless system. \n\n\n\nWho should attend: These trainings are accessible for everyone but will have particular relevance for homeless/housing assistance providers\, community-based partners working with people seeking services\, and representatives from systems adjacent to our homeless response system. Right now we are prioritizing trainings for providers working in King County\, WA. If you are outside of King County and would like to inquire about available spots in upcoming trainings\, or if you are are interested in scheduling a separate training for your community\, please contact Dimitri Groce\, Director of Practice Innovation at Building Changes. \n\n\n\nWhat will be covered: In this training\, participants will learn the Diversion approach and apply their skills through hands-on practice guided by experienced Diversion Coaches. The Diversion approach is intended to be a fast intervention applicable at any step in helping individuals and families identify immediate\, safe housing arrangements. It can be coupled with financial assistance for temporary or permanent housing arrangements outside of the homeless system. \n\n\n\nFormat: Each training is two days\, taking place 9:30 am–3:30 pm each day. Day 1 of the training will be virtual\, and Day 2 will be in person at Pacific Tower in Seattle.

The daily challenges and joys are set against a backdrop of systems of oppression and intersect in countless ways with other social justice issues. In short\, this work is not easy. \n\n\n\nJoin us for series of workshops with Dr. Leticia Nieto to find ways to better support yourself as advocate and in turn\, deepen your advocacy skills to better support survivors. DESCRIPTION:Debt can be a huge barrier when trying to move on from financial abuse and accessing critical resources. Learn how to support survivors with debt\, including rental\, automobile and medical debt and how to navigate bankruptcy. \n\n\n\nThis training is intended for advocates\, especially housing advocates\, at CEGV membership agencies*. The Northwest Justice Project‘s CHEER Unit will be walking us through how to support survivors with debt\, understand their rights as consumers\, and support in decisions around bankruptcy. This training will provide an overview of Consumer Law\, how to navigate Rental Debt\, Automobile & Medical Debt\, and Bankruptcy. SUMMARY:Survivors FIRST: Past & Future Impact in the National Survivors Justice Movement
DESCRIPTION:This Domestic Violence Awareness Month\, please join us for a reflection on the impact Survivors FIRST has made in our local community of survivor-defendants AND in the national movement for survivors justice. Since launch in 2019\, Survivors FIRST has diverted 800 survivors of gender-based violence – predominantly African American women and women of color – facing criminal charges that stem from being a survivor away from the criminal justice system. During that timeframe\, this innovative model has expanded to Nashville and Portland. By stabilizing women who are survivor defendants without the need for prison\, Survivors FIRST is helping counteract the rate of incarcerated women in Washington\, which has increased in recent years. DESCRIPTION:In a study titled\, “There’s No One I Can Trust”\, 50% of domestic violence survivors with direct experience of mandated reports said the mandated report made things much worse. Only 3% stated it made things much better. Additionally\, over 1 in 3 survivors stated they have not asked for help for fear of mandated reporting. \n\n\n\nWe must take seriously the harms of mandatory reporting practices on survivors\, especially those most impacted such as youth\, BIPOC\, and LGBTQ+ survivors. Our collective work requires upholding survivor self-determination.  \n\n\n\nWe are honored to be a sponsor of the upcoming book launch of How to End Family Policing: From Outrage to Action (Haymarket). Join us as we hear from authors Shannon Perez-Darby and Shawn Koyano\, along with community organizers Såhi Velasco and Sully Sullivan\, for an evening of reading\, conversation\, and engagement!  \n\n\n\nCopies of the book will be available to purchase at the event. SUMMARY:HATC Education Forum Healthy Connections: A Sexual Health Education Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Monica Schell\, MSW (she/they) joins us from The Harborview Abuse & Trauma Center (HATC) to present Healthy Connections: A Sexual Health Education Curriculum. HATC developed a comprehensive sexual health education curriculum for high school students in Washington State. The lessons are meant to act as a “second dose” of sex ed and should build upon topics students received in their first unit of sex ed (such as affirmative consent and bystander intervention). The lesson topics are: Setting & Respecting Boundaries\, Healthy Relationships\, Digital Consent\, and Supporting a Friend: Options After an Assault. This training will provide an overview of the Healthy Connections curriculum and best practices for implementation. This training will also show the impact the lesson topics had on students\, as well as the effectiveness of comprehensive\, shame-free sexual health education as a sexual assault prevention tool.

DESCRIPTION:About HHAD \n\n\n\nHousing and Homelessness Advocacy Day (HHAD) is one of the largest annual lobby days at the state capitol in Olympia. Advocates gather from all over Washington to meet in person with their lawmakers and rally for housing justice. \n\n\n\nNo past experience is required! Our team of legislative district leads will guide you through the day\, and you’ll be invited to short trainings over Zoom before HHAD to get briefed on the bills we are supporting and how to effectively talk with lawmakers. \n\n\n\nHHAD is hosted by the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance and the Washington Housing Alliance Action Fund\, and has strong presence and leadership from people directly impacted by housing injustice\, including through the Resident Action Project. \n\n\n\nGood to know: \n\n\n\nThe Housing Alliance does not organize transportation for HHAD\, but if you aren’t able to catch a ride through one of the above transportation options\, you can connect with other HHAD attendees to self-organize carpools here. \n\n\n\nThis form will ask you for your State Legislative District number. This helps us put you in the right group for lawmaker meetings. Look it up at https://app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder and make a mental note of your State Legislative District number (not your Congressional District number). Most people register with the legislative district where they live\, but you can also use the legislative district where you work if you prefer.  \n\n\n\nRegistering a big group? If you’re bringing 10 people or more\, save some time by using our group registration form. If your group is smaller than 10\, please register individually.  \n\n\n\nASL and Spanish interpretation will be provided during check-in\, at the rally\, in lawmaker meetings\, and at the virtual prep sessions before HHAD. Please let us know if you will use ASL or Spanish interpretation so we can be sure your specific lawmaker meetings have an interpreter.  \n\n\n\nOur friends at Waters Meet Action Fund are generously providing two buses to HHAD from Eastern and Central Washington as well as box dinners for the ride home. SUMMARY:Prevention Through Advocacy: Integrating Movement History\, Prevention Theory\, and Practice into Advocate Training
DESCRIPTION:Prevention Through Advocacy is a two-part workshop that supports sexual and domestic violence organizations in rethinking advocate training as a place for violence prevention and movement building in addition to survivor advocacy.In this training\, participants will explore how the advocacy training model has been shaped by professionalization and funding structures\, including the costs and benefits of standardized training that is integrated with medical\, legal\, law enforcement\, social service\, and community systems. \n\n\n\nBoth sessions will be from 10am to Noon via zoom – part one on Thursday\, March 5th\, and part two on Thursday\, March 12th. \n\n\n\nPart 1 will look closely at the tensions this history creates for survivor-centered\, community-driven\, and intersectional work. You will situate your own training practices within the broader movement to end gender-based violence. Through a case study\, participants will explore how professionalization and funding pressures can narrow the scope of advocacy\, pulling organizations away from intersectional\, community-rooted efforts to end violence and toward managing harm within existing systems. Participants will examine how advocate training can invite people into the movement rather than frame the role as limited to a volunteer or job function. \n\n\n\nPart 2 will shift to concrete strategies for designing and facilitating movement-aligned advocate training that builds community\, shared purpose\, and solidarity among advocates and staff.
