SUMMARY:Survivors FIRST: Past & Future Impact in the National Survivors Justice Movement
DESCRIPTION:This Domestic Violence Awareness Month\, please join us for a reflection on the impact Survivors FIRST has made in our local community of survivor-defendants AND in the national movement for survivors justice. Since launch in 2019\, Survivors FIRST has diverted 800 survivors of gender-based violence – predominantly African American women and women of color – facing criminal charges that stem from being a survivor away from the criminal justice system. During that timeframe\, this innovative model has expanded to Nashville and Portland. By stabilizing women who are survivor defendants without the need for prison\, Survivors FIRST is helping counteract the rate of incarcerated women in Washington\, which has increased in recent years. This event will be an opportunity to learn about the positive change Survivors FIRST has made in King County\, who has been served\, and where the work is going next. \n\n\n\n***Please RSVP by emailing dwagoner@kingcounty.gov by October 3\, 2025*** \n\n\n\nStreet parking available.

SUMMARY:HATC Education Forum Healthy Connections: A Sexual Health Education Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Monica Schell\, MSW (she/they) joins us from The Harborview Abuse & Trauma Center (HATC) to present Healthy Connections: A Sexual Health Education Curriculum. HATC developed a comprehensive sexual health education curriculum for high school students in Washington State. The lesson topics are: Setting & Respecting Boundaries\, Healthy Relationships\, Digital Consent\, and Supporting a Friend: Options After an Assault. This training will provide an overview of the Healthy Connections curriculum and best practices for implementation. This training will also show the impact the lesson topics had on students\, as well as the effectiveness of comprehensive\, shame-free sexual health education as a sexual assault prevention tool.

SUMMARY:Prevention In Practice: Exploring the Endless Possibilities of Violence Prevention Programming
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, we are exploring the wonderful\, creative\, and diverse field of gender-based violence prevention at our Prevention in Practice: Exploring the Endless Possibilities of Violence Prevention Programming webinar. \n\n\n\nThe world of prevention is chock-full of possibilities\, both in what programming can look like but also in the positive impact prevention can have. When violence prevention is guided by public health approaches\, anti‑oppressive frameworks\, and community organizing\, it becomes more than a set of strategies; it becomes an opportunity to innovate\, strengthen community relationships\, and introduce programming that communities may not have previously accessed or engaged with.  \n\n\n\nBut\, what does that mean in practice? What can and does violence prevention actually look like when we get down to brass tacks?  \n\n\n\nJoin WSCADV / SA Prevention Staff and preventionists from across WA state as we explore different examples of violence prevention programming. From leveraging social media for narrative change\, to working collaboratively with other local resource providers\, to policy change; the world of prevention is vast and vibrant and full of possibilities! Let’s explore what’s possible together!  \n\n\n\nWe’re excited and honored to host and feature the work of preventionists from: \n\n\n\nLutheran Community Services NW (Spokane) \n\n\n\nEmergency Support Shelter  \n\n\n\nMalawi Seattle Association \n\n\n\nKalispel Tribe of Indians \n\n\n\nYWCA Clark County

SUMMARY:Understanding Narrative Power and Tools for Messaging & Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:We are hosting an interactive in-person training on storytelling and communication. Join us! \n\n\n\nHow do we build narrative power? The narratives around us shape how people make sense of issues\, what they see as possible\, and whether they feel moved to act. When narratives shift\, they can open space for new solutions\, challenge harmful assumptions\, and help communities see shared possibilities. \n\n\n\nWe are teaming up with El Centro de la Raza and reimagine collective to bring this conversation to our community. This is the first time reimagine collective is hosting a live Reimagine Insights session in Seattle\, Washington\, so you don’t want to miss it! \n\n\n\nYou can expect time to network and shared tools for developing values-based messages that connect with people and inspire action. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Space is limited\, so get your spot today!

SUMMARY:Rural and Interfamilial Trafficking Virtual Training Event
DESCRIPTION:There is an increased public awareness around the prevalence\, impact and salience of sex trafficking\, human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. When allegations of trafficking and exploitation are made known to law enforcement and social services\, the forensic interview process can be an effective tool for gathering victim statements and assessing what has occurred. This training will discuss the specifics of working with victims of trafficking and exploitation and offer guidance for conducting forensic interviews with this population. Moving cases from the investigation stage to prosecution is particularly difficult in the context of human trafficking\, and successful human trafficking investigations require a unique approach. This workshop also addresses potential avenues of corroboration\, technology-facilitated human trafficking\, proactive strategies\, and investigative resources. SUMMARY:Digital Harm\, Human Impact: Achieving Trauma-Informed Justice in Technology-Facilitated Abuse Cases
DESCRIPTION:Victims of online exploitation face unique obstacles on their path to recovery. When the trauma of abuse is exacerbated by the presence of digital evidence—including non-consensual images\, distribution of child sexual abuse material\, or ongoing online harassment—the complexities of healing and securing justice multiply exponentially. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will dissect these challenges\, providing investigators\, prosecutors\, and multidisciplinary members with the critical\, trauma-informed strategies required to successfully navigate these cases from initial investigation through long-term recovery support. Participants will gain practical tools for ethical evidence handling\, advanced communication\, and securing comprehensive redress for survivors. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:  \n\n\n\n\nAnalyze the specific impacts of trauma related to technology-facilitated abuse.\n\n\n\nDevelop strategies for managing secondary trauma risks\, including the resurfacing of exploitation material and addressing issues of long-term trafficking.\n\n\n\nIdentify and secure potential remedies for victims such as restitution and forfeiture.\n\n\n\n\nPresenter: Kathleen Nolan\, JD – Coursing Justice
