SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Month Webinar: Protecting workers from abuse
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by King County Sexual Assault Resource Center \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkers are protected from sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace by federal\, state and local laws. But many still find it difficult to actually report abuse and get support. This is particularly true for Latinx survivors\, who face additional barriers such as language or fears of systems that may prevent them from seeking help when they experience sexual harassment or abuse.  \n\n\n\nKCSARC Dando Voz staff and guest panelists from Casa Latina\, Seattle Domestic Workers Standards Board\, Seattle OLS and the Washington Wage Claim Project will provide local historic perspective on how worker rights and freedoms from harassment were enacted\, what they guarantee\, and how Latinx workers can access support.  \n\n\n\nLearn why some workers\, such as hotel and domestic workers\, need specific safeguards\, support and reporting processes. We’ll address what barriers remain\, and next steps we can take to protect workers.  \n\n\n\nProtegiendo a los trabajadores contra el abuso \n\n\n\nLas leyes federales\, estatales y locales protegen a los trabajadores contra el acoso sexual y el abuso en el lugar de trabajo. Sin embargo\, para muchos trabajadores sigue siendo difícil denunciar situaciones de abuso y recibir ayuda. Prior to that\, Mr. Jefferson was a public defense attorney in Thurston County for more than 16 years and previously worked as public defender in Kent and Seattle. He helped establish Thurston Count’s pretrial diversion program\, First Look program\, Trueblood Diversion program and Felony Leadership Improvement Project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Osborne consults on antiracist leadership\, social justice practice\, and prevention of gender-based violence. A former prosecutor and trial attorney\, her expertise includes historic legacies of racism; the evolution of structural process\, policies\, and cultures; roles of women of color in positions of power and leadership and on organizations becoming racially equitable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than 25 years\, Doris O’Neal has been dedicated to survivor-defined advocacy\, public policy\, and restorative justice\, with a focus on helping survivors who are African American\, living in poverty\, or experiencing housing instability. Doris O’Neal is currently the Director of Gender Based Violence Specialized Services.
